'Luscious' comes from the senses," said artistic director Debra Loewen. Luscious, Loewen said, can describe the texture of food in the mouth, but also fits other kinds of sensual textures and movements. To reflect that, her performers will wear velvet dresses in one of the dances.
For this concert, Loewen will bring back "In This Condition," performed by company member Mauriah Kraker. It draws on a story by Lydia Davis, from the perspective of a pregnant woman "in a hormonal blaze," Loewen said, stirred by almost everything she sees.
Vocalist Amanda Schoofs joins dancer Laura Murphy in "Layers." Both women will be moving; both will have the complex scores they're performing written on their arms. Loewen said. Naturally, this being Wild Space, Schoofs and Murphy will reference those cheat sheets during the performance, in a way that "lightens the tone of the piece," Loewen said.
Composer Tim Russell will improvise music for the group dance "Fevered Sleep." Guest artist Jade Jablonski has created a solo dance for this program.
